Malaysia urges ASEAN to step up anti-cybercrime cooperation

Kuala Lumpur, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Malaysia considered on Tuesday an urgent need to articulate stronger and more coordinated cooperation among the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to combat the rising threats of cybercrime.

Upon opening the 25th ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) and its Related Meetings in this capital on Tuesday, Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail noted that cybercrimes range from financial scams to ransomware attacks.

Nasution Ismail emphasized that these crimes have emerged as a serious and urgent challenge in today’s digital age.

Our digital defenses must evolve with technology, the home minister stated, urging regional efforts to keep pace with rapidly evolving cyber threats.

The minister believes that adopting new technologies, including the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), is crucial to improve significantly how laws against these crimes are detected, prevented, and enforced.
