Zelenski admits impossibility of Ukraine’s current NATO membership

Kiev Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenski admitted today that for the time being his country will not be able to become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

“Today, it is impossible,” he declared in an interview with the Sky News television channel, while refraining from commenting on Ukraine’s future prospects for membership in the Atlantic bloc, and limited himself to reiterating that for NATO “it is beneficial to have an ally like Kiev.”

The military bloc’s summit in The Hague is being held on June 24-25.

About 45 heads of state and government, 45 foreign ministers and defense ministers are expected to attend.

Kiev has repeatedly expressed its desire to become a full member of the alliance as soon as possible.

In September 2022, Ukraine applied for NATO membership on an accelerated basis. On December 9 last year, Zelenski admitted that he would try to obtain an invitation to the alliance from then U.S. President Joe Biden before Donald Trump’s inauguration.
