Colloquium in Cuba recalls historic Fidel-Hemingway meeting

Havana, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) The 20th Ernest Hemingway International Colloquium recalls on Thursday the historic meeting between Fidel Castro and the US writer in Havana, among other activities that bring the author of "The Old Man and the Sea" up for debate.

Taking place at the Universal Art Building of the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) until June 28, the event serves as a space to honor and share knowledge about the life and work of the Nobel Prize-winning author in Literature.

According to the program, participants will visit the site where the meeting took place on May 15, 1960, during the Marlin Fishing Tournament, which has been organized since May 1950 and is considered the oldest of its kind in the world.

The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution said at the time, “I had no experience in that, but I participated, and I had a good skipper. And I was lucky that, with little time left on the second day, in the last hour, I caught two marlins. And I won the prize.”

The academic event invites participants to the launch of the digital book “Fiesta” (Party) and the keynote speech “Vigia Farm, from the Origins to Hemingway.”

It also proposes an overview of “An Ideal Couple” as interpreted by Hemingway’s marginalia, and “To Have and Not to Have,” “Hemingway the Playwright and His Mark on Stage,” “Ernest Hemingway: The Pen That Traveled the World,” and “Spanish Influences on the Vigia Farm: The Only Living Ernest Hemingway Museum in the World,” among other researches.

Opened on Wednesday, the Colloquium hosts 19 presentations, 11 of which are national and eight coming from Japan, Argentina, Canada, and the United States.
