Floods in southwest China kill six people

Beijing, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) Heavy rains, which caused severe flooding in the southeastern Chinese province of Guizhou since last Tuesday, have already left six dead, the Central Flood Control Office reported today in the capital.

According to the source, the water level of the Duliu, Pingyong and Zhaihao rivers rose rapidly, reaching a maximum flow of 11,360 cubic meters per second for the first time in the last 30 years.

Many low-lying areas in the county were submerged and basic infrastructure in some localities was severely damaged, resulting in traffic disruptions, telecommunications outages and loss of life.

Currently, the water level in the county has dropped below the warning level; this has allowed various tasks to be carried out, such as sediment clearance and drainage of floodwaters, epidemic prevention and disinfection, post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, and the search for trapped persons.

Heavy rains and upstream inflows caused extensive flooding in two counties of Guizhou province, which led to the evacuation of some 80,000 people.

According to official reports, 48,900 residents were temporarily evacuated in Rongjiang county, and 32,000 in Congjiang county.
