Havana to Vibrate with piano notes and film music

Havana, June 26 (Prensa Latina) San Felipe Neri Oratory in Havana's Historic Center getting ready for Music for Film concert next Saturday, a tribute by virtuoso pianist Ulises Hernandez to Cuban intellectual Alfredo Guevara on his centenary.

Accompanied by Havana Lyceum Orchestra, under the direction of maestro Jose A. Mendez Padron, the musician will perform a program that includes pieces composed for the films Miradas, La ola, and La caja negra by movie director Enrique (Kiki) Alvarez; Memorias de la fiebre by Manuel Jorge Perez; El acompañante and La edad de la peseta by Pavel Giroud; and La invencion de las especias by Ecuadorian director Tania Hermida.

“These scores, originally conceived to accompany audiovisual narratives, are now presented in concert format as pieces with their own musical value, revealing the evocative power of film music when it is detached from the image,” the concert announcement explains.

The presentation invites to enjoy the artistic and musical creations of Ulises Hernandez, whose catalog of works for the seventh art has garnered national and international awards: he twice won the Music Choir at the Havana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, in 1991 for Sed (Thirst), by Enrique Alvarez; and in 2024 thanks to The Invention of Species, by Tania Hermida.

This latter production earned him a nomination this year for Best Film Music at the Platino Ibero-American Film Awards.

Hernandez, as a pianist and music producer, has twice won the Cubadisco Grand Prize, in 2007 with Cinco Conciertos para piano (Five Piano Concertos), by Heitor Villa-Lobos; and in 2008 for Mozart en La Habana (Mozart in Havana), for which he won the award for Best Record Producer of the Year.

A pianist, composer, record producer, professor, researcher, and promoter, Ulises Hernandez has performed Cuba, Europe, and Latin America.
