Some 2,168,431 Hungarians voted against Ukraine’s EU accession, representing 95 percent of those who participated in the referendum. Only 5 percent supported Ukraine’s accession, the head of government, quoted by Hungarian television channel M1, stated.
Orban, who was one of the first to vote, announced that day that he had cast his vote against Ukraine’s EU accession.
The prime minister even attached several photos to his publication, one of which showed his completed ballot with the word uncircled.
Sending ballot papers to Hungarian citizens to participate started on April 14, and collecting responses ended on June 20.
Orban also stated that Budapest opposed Ukraine’s accession to the EU and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), as this could lead to an endless war in Europe, and EU taxpayers will fund Ukraine’s million-strong army for decades.
