The press man was “A legendary voice that accompanied us in key moments of our history,” said journalist Carlos Villarreal, who worked for Aguirre at Radio Programas del Perú (RPP).
Aguirre, who in his native land was a collaborator of President Salvador Allende, earned the respect and affection of his colleagues and of Peruvian society for his high-level professional work and his attachment to progressive positions since his arrival in 1973.
The great reception he received in Peru made him to stay forever and add to his nationality the country where he lived most of his 91 years of life.
He worked in the press and radio, and it was in this that he made his greatest contribution by turning Radio Programas del Perú (RPP) a variety and discreet-tuned station into a national news network which became the country’s most important.
The Peruvian people remember him in particular for his radio presence, when his voice, warm and calm, recommended serenity and gave guidelines in cases of earthquake or dynamite attacks during the internal conflict (1980-2000).
Solidarity was one of his virtues, demonstrated at that time by a little-known public activity, his humanitarian visits, along with religious, to prisoners accused of terrorism.
He passed away in his 91, he was awarded multiple distinctions in Peru and Chile.
