At the start of the national holiday commemorating the anniversary on June 25, oil industry leaders highlighted the progress made in the construction of four fuel storage tanks, which will replace those damaged by the large-scale fire that occurred at the Matanzas supertankers base in August 2022.
That western province plays a key role in recovering the storage capacity lost in the fatal incident, and oil industry workers are, so far, ahead of schedule, Irenaldo Perez Cardoso, deputy director of the Cuba-Petroleo Union (CUPET), stated.
Quoted by Trabajadores weekly, the executive told reporters that “after the fire at Supertankers Base in Matanzas, the commitment was to recover that base, and the project has currently reached a significant level of progress, which is a priority within the logistics of CUPET’s fuel systems.”
Perez Cardoso underscored that, despite the country’s complex situation in accessing international oil supply markets -due to the US government’s blockade-, alternatives are being sought to manage hydrocarbons for electricity generation and economic support.
According to the source, the closing ceremony will take place this Tuesday, July 1, at the Hermanos Diaz oil refinery in eastern Santiago de Cuba, in recognition of the company’s positive results.
