Egypt prepares international meeting on Gaza reconstruction

Cairo, July 1 (Prensa Latina) Egypt continues its efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that will lead to an end to the conflict, while preparing for an international conference on post-war reconstruction and governance there.

This was announced by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in an interview with a national television station.

“We are intensifying diplomatic efforts, together with other mediators, to secure a 60-day truce in Gaza, which would allow for the release of Palestinian and Israeli prisoners, as well as the entry of humanitarian aid to the coastal enclave,” he stated.

The Foreign Minister explained that such an agreement would serve as the basis for a long-term truce backed by international guarantees.

“There is an American understanding of the importance of including guarantees in any upcoming agreement to ensure its maintenance.

Renewed (Israeli) aggression would seriously threaten regional stability,” he warned.

Abdelatty expressed hope for a settlement on the issue within the next 15 days.

He also confirmed preparations for an international conference on the post-war reconstruction and governance of Gaza, which would take place a few weeks after the cessation of fighting takes effect.

The initiative is part of a broader plan presented by Cairo, endorsed at the Arab League summit on March 4, and later supported by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the European Union, China, and Russia.

“We are working vigorously to convene the conference, which includes UN participation,” he stressed.

He confirmed that the preparatory work, including the agenda and logistical planning, has been completed.

The two-day meeting will feature four workshops focusing on the role of the private sector in early recovery, security arrangements, the governance of Gaza, and the question of who will administer the territory, he noted.
