Honduras: Chronically ill patients receive medications at home

Tegucigalpa, July 1 (Prensa Latina) The Honduran Ministry of Health will begin home delivery of medications for patients with chronic conditions, with the goal of relieving hospital jamming and improving care for vulnerable populations.

Health Minister Carla Paredes announced two weeks ago that the initiative will begin this Tuesday, and in its first phase will benefit more than 23,000 people with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma, and arthritis, to name a few.

The Honduran Social Security Institute will also join the project and will begin with retirees and pensioners, while by December it will extend this service to all insured individuals with chronic conditions, regardless of age.

Sensitive medications, such as insulin, will be transported in dry ice and distributed through home delivery services in urban areas and through healthcare networks in rural regions.

The Ministry of Health urged chronically ill patients in the public sector and people awaiting surgery to visit their healthcare centers to register in the system and access the new free home delivery service.

For the minister, this strategy will significantly reduce lines at pharmacies, prevent exposure of older adults in hospitals, reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients, and ensure continuity of treatment.

In the opinion of the Central American nation’s health authorities, the implementation of this innovative service shows that, even in contexts with limited resources, progress can be made toward a more humane, efficient, and universal system, focused on the patient.
