New Delhi, July 2 (Prensa Latina) India and Pakistan simultaneously exchanged, through diplomatic channels, lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in custody, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

New Delhi shared the names of 382 civilian and 81 fishermen prisoners who are Pakistani or presumed to be Pakistani, and Islamabad also provided information on 53 civilian and 193 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or believed to be from the neighboring country, the official statement said.

According to the source, the Indian government has requested Pakistan’s prompt release and repatriation of those who have served their sentences and the rest of the detainees, vessels, and Indian defense personnel.

It also called on Islamabad to provide immediate consular access to 26 of the Indian prisoners and ensure the safety and well-being of all those awaiting their release and repatriation to India.

The Foreign Ministry assured that India remains committed to addressing all humanitarian issues as a priority and, in this context, urged Pakistan to expedite the process of verifying the nationality of 80 prisoners in the custody of Indian authorities, whose return to Pakistan is pending due to a lack of such information.

According to official data, 2,661 Indian fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners have returned to the country from Pakistan since 2014.

This figure includes 500 Indian fishermen and 13 civilians who have been repatriated from 2023 to date.
