The initiative seeks to make up for the defensive gap following the U.S. freeze on shipments of Patriot interceptor missiles and other systems (GMLRS, Hellfire, Stinger), The New York Times cited Cornelius.
The Morgen Zeitung newspaper revealed that Berlin is awaiting authorization to finance two Patriot batteries from U.S. inventories.
The talks, already underway for weeks, were described by Cornelius as very intense.
Local media point out that Germany currently assumes the lead in military support to Kiev (28% of the European total in 2024), while the Patriots are critical to protect the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
According to them, the ongoing talks are evidence of fractures in the pro-Ukraine coalition following Washington’s decision not to supply Kiyiv with more weapons.
