Vietnam: Largest war remnant bomb defused in Nghe An province

Hanoi, July 4 (Prensa Latina) The largest war remnant bomb found to date in Nghe An, estimated to weigh nearly 500 kilograms, was safely defused by members of the Military Command of that Vietnamese province.

The discovery was immediately reported to the authorities, and a specialized team from the Van An Military Command and Regional Defense 1st arrived at the scene and confirmed that it was an MK83 bomb, weighing nearly 500 kg and with an intact detonator, posing a high risk, the VNA news agency reported.

Once residents and animals were evacuated from the danger zone, measures such as a security perimeter and continuous surveillance were taken.

Shortly afterward, the Provincial Military Command’s Engineering Section proceeded to deactivate the detonator and transported the bomb to the Khe Luoi area, where it was safely destroyed, ensuring the full protection of people and their property.

More than 50 years after the end of the war, millions of unexploded bombs and mines still lie underground in Vietnam, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens and hindering development.

According to the National Mine Action Center, the country still has approximately 800,000 tons of unexploded ordnance scattered across various provinces and cities, bringing the total area contaminated or suspected of being contaminated to 5.6 million hectares.

The sudden explosion of these devices has already caused more than 40,000 deaths and injured some 60,000 people, many of them children or the main breadwinners of their families.

In 2010, the National Action Program to combat the aftermath of bombs and mines left over from the war was approved. According to the Ministry of Defense, specialized forces have cleared more than 500,000 hectares of land over the past 15 years, detecting and neutralizing millions of bombs, grenades, antipersonnel mines, and projectiles.
