Uruguay extends operation to assist homeless people

Montevideo, July 5 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government extended the red alert issued for homeless people due to low temperatures, it was reported.

The decision comes as weather will improve and temperatur will rise according to forecasts.

In response, authorities decided to maintain the operation to assist people living on public roads until Tuesday, July 8, according to the National Emergency System (Sinae).

The latest report from Sinae indicates that 2,678 persons were assisted early Friday morning.

Of that total, 2,146 were in shelters run by the Ministry of Social Development (Mides) and another 532 were in evacuation centers.

A total of 285 transfers were made, most of them in police patrol cars. Three of these were forced evacuations of vulnerable people who refused assistance.

On the 16th day, 6 people required emergency medical care, the Sinae reported.
