According to the statement from the National Human Rights Coordinator, the proposal was presented together with teachers and members from the Indigenous Farmers Movement of the Ngabe Bugle region and Eastern Chirica, in which they call on the deputies to urgently set up a truth commission.
The activists demanded this group to investigate, document and analyze what happened during the protests, which have now lasted more than 70 straight days, and where human rights violations could have taken place after the intervention of the public forces.
The objective of the commission would be to prepare a public report that would allow to assess the conditions, circumstances and magnitude of the abuses committed; furthermore, with it, justice processes, reparation to the victims and non-repetition could be channeled.
The day before, it was known that deputies Lenin Ulate, Walkiria Chandler and Alexandra Brenes of the independent coalition Vamos, in addition to Nixon Andrade and Flor Brenes of the Democratic Revolutionary Party, received the union leaders, who remember the 15 years of the 2010 repression in Changuinola for the nicknamed Chorizo Bill, which left dead and crippled people for life.
