UN warns about inadequacies of warning systems

United Nations, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) The tragedy that occurred in Texas, United States, today reflects the inadequacy of early warning systems for meteorological phenomena, the United Nations (UN) warned.

According to the latest reports, more than 100 people are dead and 170 are still missing after flash floods devastated the center of the territory, where search efforts continue, especially after a rapid rise of the Guadalupe River to almost unprecedented levels.

In a statement, the UN warned about the increase in the frequency and intensity of these extreme events and stressed the importance of strengthening prevention and preparedness for them.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) regretted what happened and called for ensuring early warnings for all because “flash floods are one of the most lethal natural hazards in the world, with more than five thousand deaths per year”.

In this case, “one of the problems was that the latest warnings came when people were sleeping and there were no local sirens in the camps,” the WMO said.
