Canada will recognize the Palestinian State

Ramallah, July 31 (Prensa Latina) The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to officially recognize the State of Palestine next September.

In a statement released by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the Ministry described Ottawa’s stance as “historic and courageous,” while underscoring its consistency with international law and relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions.

“This measure represents a significant contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace, as well as strengthening bilateral relations between Canada and Palestine at all levels,” the statement emphasized.

The Ministry also renewed its call to countries that have not yet recognized Palestine as an independent state to take the initiative “and stand on the right side of history, putting an end to decades of injustice inflicted on our people.”

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also urged the nations of the world to sign and adopt the New York Declaration as an essential step toward assuming collective responsibility to halt genocide, forced displacement, and the illegal annexation of territories, as well as to protect the two-state solution.

In this regard, it emphasized that such a commitment is vital to ensuring security, stability, and prosperity in the region and globally.

The day before, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held a telephone conversation with the Canadian Prime Minister, during which Carney confirmed that his government will officially announce the recognition in conjunction with the upcoming convening of the UN General Assembly.
