Today’s report by the president of the National Ports Administration, Pablo Genta, admited such decline, so hitting regional traffic, mainly Paraguayan cargo arriving by river for transshipment.
“In the first five months there has been a general reduction of almost 30 percent in the movement of import and export containers, but in transit and transshipment it is in the order of 50 percent, Genta said in a radio interview.
He commented that the trend originated in the second semester of 2024, but became more acute since February 2025.
He referred to the decision of the shipping company MSC to take the transits from Paraguay to its terminal in Buenos Aires after it could not close contracts here with Terminal Cuenca del Plata, where the transnational of Belgian origin Katoen Natie has control.
“There was also another Linea Mediterraneo service that decided to end up in Rio Grande (Brazil) and not in Montevideo,” the port manager said.
