Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the number “reflects the strength, unity, and determination of our people.”

On the eve of the campaign, Ahmed wrote on his X profile that it goes beyond planting trees; it is a call to action so that all urban or rural young and old citizens participate in restoring the environment and protecting water sources.

It also seeks to improve livelihoods and ensure a sustainable future for future generations.

The Green Legacy Initiative represents a key pillar in Ethiopia’s goal of planting 7.5 billion seedlings during the current rainy season (June-September).

Since its launch in 2019 by the head of government, the reforestation program has facilitated the planting of more than 40 billion trees across the country.
