The European Commission (EC) does not believe that imposing a network tax on large technology companies is a viable solution.
This criterion appears in the debate on who should finance the deployment of the 5G communications network and broadband.
Such discussions were reflected by a spokesman for the EU executive. The issue pits Deutsche Telekom, Orange , Telefonica and Telecom Italia against Alphabet’s Google, Meta’s Facebook, Netflix, Microsoft and Amazon.
Europe’s major telecom operators have been urging European Union (EU) regulators for years to make the big techs bear part of the rollout costs, as they account for a huge part of internet traffic.
The tech giants oppose this, calling it a tax on the Internet and pointing to their own efforts to increase the efficiency of their services.
