Parliamentarian challenges government in El Salvador on reforms

San Salvador, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) I tell the ruling party to have courage and call for a Constituent Assembly, Claudia Ortiz challenged today the opposition parliamentarian, , in relation to recent reforms to the country's Constitution.

Ortiz added her voice to others who oppose the reforms to the 1983 Constitution approved by the majority of the New Ideas party in the Legislative Assembly on July 31 and which now allow the indefinite reelection of a president, which is seen by critics as a step to perpetuate in power.

She denied that the action of the Parliament was justified on the grounds that the people asked for a constitutional reform. It is a “lie”, she asserted.

She rejected the veracity of the argument of the New Ideas deputies of enabling the indefinite presidential reelection as a popular demand and challenged them to call for a Constituent Assembly to prove it.

She recalled that in 1982 Salvadorans went to elections to elect a Constituent Legislative Assembly, which is the one empowered, with popular endorsement, to change the Constitution of the Republic.

She accused the members of the cyan (blue) bench of usurping the power of the people, to define the limits of the government and this is a serious violation of the Constitution, she stressed.

San Salvador, 8 ago (Prensa Latina) Le digo al oficialismo que tenga valor y convoque a una Asamblea Constituyente, retó hoy la parlamentaria opositora, Claudia Ortiz, en relación con recientes reformas a la Constitución del país.

Cuerpo : Ortiz sumó su voz a otras que adversan las reformas a la Constitución de 1983 aprobadas por la mayoría del partido Nuevas Ideas en la Asamblea Legislativa el 31 de julio y que permiten ahora la reelección indefinida de un presidente, lo que es visto por críticos como un paso para perpetuarse en el poder.

Negó que la acción del Parlamento estuviera justifica en que el pueblo pidió una reforma constitucional. Es “mentira”, aseveró.

Rechazó la veracidad del argumento de los diputados Nuevas Ideas de habilitar la reelección presidencial indefinida como una demanda popular y los retó a convocar a una Asamblea Constituyente para que lo demuestren.

Recordó que en 1982 los salvadoreños fueron a elecciones para elegir a una Asamblea Legislativa Constituyente, que es la facultada, con aval popular, para cambiar la Constitución de la República.

Acusó a los integrantes de la bancada cian (azul) de usurpar el poder del pueblo, para definir cuáles son los límites del gobierno y esto es una violación grave a la Constitución, subrayó.
