Spain condemns Israel fortrying to occupy Gaza

Madrid, Aug 8 (Prensa Latina) Spain strongly condemned the Israeli government's decision to occupy Gaza and reiterated that the only solution for peace in the Middle East is a two-state solution with Palestine recognized.

On social media, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that occupying Gaza City “would only cause more destruction and suffering.”

Definitive peace in the region will only be achieved by establishing a two-state solution, which includes a realistic and viable State of Palestine, Albares reflected.

The Spanish Foreign Minister considered that the military occupation of Gaza is destined to escalate, when a permanent ceasefire, the massive entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of all the hostages still held by Hamas are urgently required.

For its part, the Sumar group—a government ally—demanded sanctions and an embargo, as well as the prosecution of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his crimes.

Along with the Podemos Party, both parties demanded that the international community stop looking the other way and “respond forcefully to stop the genocidal state of Israel.”

“A total arms embargo and severance of commercial and diplomatic relations with the genocidal state of Israel,” Podemos stated on social media.

The Israeli government’s Security Cabinet adopted the decision this Friday to occupy Gaza City.

On the eve, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted its systematic humanitarian aid response to Palestine, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Aecid).

Spain began increasing its assistance in October 2023 and so far this year has already allocated €20 million to Palestine, with the aim of supporting more than three million people in Gaza and the West Bank.
