Cuba commemorates UNEAC’s 64th anniversary

Havana, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) The National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) was founded on August 22, 1961, as a space for the convergence of Cuban intellectuals that contributed to solidifying the cultural and national identity.

Its founding, with National Poet Nicolas Guillen as its president, also responded to the objective of preserving the project of social justice and national independence.

It also united the island’s artistic avant-garde in pursuit of its development.

Among UNEAC’s purposes are to encourage, protect, and defend creative activity. Through several forms of promotion, both in Cuba and abroad, it fosters the cultural development of its members.

Sixty-four years after its founding, the UNEAC has not renounced its legacy and continues to be a significant link in developing the artistic creation in Cuba, promoting it on the island and beyond its borders.
