Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), Guterres asserted that what has happened in that territory also demonstrates the existence of a moral crisis and represents a failure of humanity. The UN secretary-general stated that just when it seems there are no more words left to describe the living hell in Gaza, a new one has been added: famine.
Famine is not only about food; it is the deliberate collapse of the systems needed for human survival.
The UN chief noted that people are starving, and those with the duty to act are failing. As the occupying power, Israel has unequivocal obligations under international law, including the duty of ensuring food and medical supplies for the population.
We cannot allow this situation to continue with impunity, the UN head said.
No more excuses. The time for action is not tomorrow, it is now. We need an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, and full, unfettered humanitarian access, he said.
The UN warned on Thursday that the destruction of Gaza is underway and condemned the Israeli attacks that have left several dead, wounded, and displaced.
