Uruguay’s unprecedented surgery, a milestone public health service

Montevideo, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's public health system marked a milestone with the highly complex surgical intervention performed at the Maciel Hospital in this capital, which included the removal of a tumor and the placement of a 3D prosthesis.

The operation was performed on a 26-year-old woman by the Thoracic Surgery Reference Center at Maciel Hospital, which treats patients from all over the country.

The newspaper El Observador released the news and considered it a surgical and technological advance, marking an important step forward in the care of users of the State Health Services Administration (ASSE).

The patient, diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare and aggressive tumor that invaded her chest wall, began treatment a year earlier with radiation therapy and chemotherapy to reduce the tumor’s size, to in the end allow its removal.

The location of the tumor required the removal of the right lung, as well as muscles and ribs from the chest wall, a highly complex medical and surgical challenge aimed at preventing tumor recurrence.

Reconstruction of the affected area was made possible through the use of a 3D titanium prosthesis, which is custom-designed for each patient and was made in Argentina with a digital design adapted to their exact anatomy.

In addition, a system of custom-fixed bars and meshes was used to ensure the prosthesis’s placement. The cost of this piece was covered by Maciel Hospital, the source reported.
