“He will not attend, he has no medical recommendation for that”, told the press one of his lawyers before entering the first room of the Supreme Federal Court in this capital, where there will be sessions scheduled until Friday.
Seven close allies of the former president are also charged in the same case.
The current stage will be decisive to determine the responsibility of all the defendants in the facts.
The lawsuit examines the complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office, which held Bolsonaro and his allies responsible for five crimes, including coup d’état, criminal organization and aggravated damages.
They are also charged with the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and damage to protected property.
These combined charges could result in severe prison sentences, depending on the interpretation and vote of the magistrates.
The first phase of the deliberation will address procedural issues.
Among them is the validity of the plea agreement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, a key player in the scheme investigated by the court.
