Ethiopia: Nuclear power plant among future megaprojects

Addis Ababa, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today announced a series of future megaprojects, including the construction of a nuclear power plant, a strategy that would mark a bold shift towards industrialization and self-sufficiency of the nation.

Ahmed made the announcement of the investment of more than $30 billion during the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa and financed by the local people over 14 years.

Like GERD, he said, the nuclear power plant will be large in scale and significance, while revealing the imminent construction of a new airport for the Ethiopian Airlines Group, the largest aviation hub in Africa.

About this project, he informed that it will have an initial capacity to handle 60 million passengers annually and will be a key component of Ethiopia’s strategy to consolidate its role as a leader in air transport and continental logistics.

On the other hand, the head of the Ethiopian government announced the inauguration in the near future of the country’s first gas factory and, in the same period, will begin construction of a second one ten times larger.

In addition, he continued, an oil refinery will start operations in less than a month, which “would turn our long-held dream of extracting oil into reality”.
