Syria: More than 16 million people in need of humanitarian aid

Damascus, Sept 9 (Prensa Latina) A total of 16,5 million people in Syria are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Arab country, Adam Abdelmoula, confirmed during a press conference at the end of his mission.

According to the senior UN official, the nation continues to face a severe displacement crisis, with more than six million citizens internally displaced and a similar number sheltered in different regions of the world.

Abdelmoula detailed that approximately 2,5 million internally and externally displaced persons have returned to their places of origin, many of them after losing their homes as a result of the prolonged conflict that affected the country for more than a decade.

The humanitarian situation remains critical. About 24% of homes in Syria have been damaged or destroyed, and the funding available to respond to this emergency is extremely scarce, the United Nations representative warned.

In this regard, he specified that the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan has barely received 14% of the $3,2 billion required for its full implementation.

Despite the difficulties, Abdelmoula highlighted the efforts of UN agencies and their partners to restore essential infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, while reaffirming his confidence in the Syrian people’s ability to move toward a dignified future, based on development and recovery.

Syria has entered a phase of early recovery and reconstruction. We are reactivating development programs and collaborating with governorates to identify priorities and design comprehensive plans to mitigate the current crisis, he noted.
