The distribution company Stromnetz Berlin pointed out that some 25,000 homes were affected, especially in the district of Treptow-Kopenick, and warned that the service could be normalized until Thursday.
Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the act and said that human lives and urban safety were deliberately put at risk, while two mobile crisis centers were activated to assist the population.
The state criminal police are investigating the perpetrators of the attack, whose first clues point to suspected elements of the far-left Indymedia platform, the ARD daily reported.
Analysts believe that the target may have been the Adlershof technology park, where firms of the military industrial complex operate, revealing the vulnerability of critical infrastructures.
The outage affected schools, kindergartens and nursing homes; several patients on mechanical ventilation were rushed to other hospitals and a dozen schools were closed.
Traffic lights, street lighting, loudspeakers, elevators, and ticket vending machines at the city’s main railway station also failed.
