On Monday, violent protests erupted in Kathmandu and other major cities of Nepal following the blocking of several foreign social networks, particularly US ones Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp (belong to Meta Platforms Inc), as well as YouTube, X, Reddit and LinkedIn, for violating national legislation. Although the Government lifted the ban on Tuesday, the riots escalated, with burning of government buildings and rampaging of demonstrators into Parliament and other venues.
In the midst of serious unrest, Prime Minister Sharma Oli resigned from office.
The Armed Forces took to the streets last Tuesday to control the situation and decreed a nationwide curfew.
The military entity issued a statement saying that the Nepal Army, assumed command of national security because ‘destructive elements continue to infiltrate the protests, destroying private and public property, causing fires, looting and deliberate violent attacks, including assault attempts’.
