Death toll from cholera epidemic in Darfur increases

Khartoum, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) A cholera epidemic in the Darfur region of western Sudan left 25 people dead in just two days amid heavy fighting between the army and paramilitaries.

Local agencies reported the rise of the epidemic in the midst of clashes between the armed forces and the so-called Rapid Support Forces (RSF.

Adam Riyal, spokesman for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, said that the number of cases reported in the last three months amounted to 11,733 with 454 fatalities.

According to the data collected, the most affected areas are Tawila, about 60 kilometers west of Al Fasher, capital of the state of North Darfur, with 5,417 cases since June and 78 deaths.

The epidemic continues to spread in other areas of Darfur, including refugee camps.

Riyal emphasized the shortage of medical supplies and other services in health centres and the lack of intravenous solutions, which further worsen the situation.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the disease has already spread to the 18 states of the African country.

Since mid-April 2023, this African nation has been plunged into an internal war, following the exacerbation of power conflicts between the head of the army, Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, and the leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The fighting has already destroyed countless livelihoods, plunging the country into a complex spiral of starvation and death.
