Cuba reaffirms commitment to the total elimination of nuclear tests

Vienna, Sept 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is willing to work together to achieve the total elimination of nuclear testing, said Armando Rodriguez, the country’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Environment.

The Cuban minister was received by Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), as part of his working visit to Austria.

The two parties discussed the status of existing relations between Cuba and the CTBTO, and the possibility of expanding them. At the same time, the decision of the Cuban government to sign an agreement on the use of seismological and hydroacoustic data for tsunami warnings was revealed, according to diplomatic sources.

Cuba was the 185th country to sign, and the 169th to ratify, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, after depositing its instrument of ratification on February 4, 2021.

With a network of more than 300 certified facilities, the CTBT collects data that can be used, in addition to its core mandate, for other purposes such as disaster mitigation, earthquake monitoring, tsunami warnings, or potential radioactivity leaks in nuclear accidents.
