Roberto Payano, president of the Dominican Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba and one of the group’s coordinators, expressed to Prensa Latina his satisfaction with the opportunity to reiterate their support for the Cuban revolutionary process alongside representatives of organizations and social movements from across the region at the event, which begins next Thursday.
Payano emphasized that delegations from more than 30 countries will participate in the meeting to reaffirm that Cuba is not alone and that it has friends willing to stand by it in the face of Washington’s economic siege and disinformation campaigns.
Likewise, attendees will demand Cuba’s removal from the United States’ unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism, a measure widely rejected by solidarity movements on the continent, he noted.
He announced that the Dominican delegates plan to visit Tuxpan, in the Mexican state of Veracruz, the port from which the historic yacht Granma set sail for Cuba in 1956. They will pay tribute to the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, and the Granma expeditionaries.
Payano also recalled that among the Granma expeditionaries was Dominican Ramón Mejia del Castillo, known as “Pichirilo,” who was one of the vessel’s helmsmen and a symbol of brotherhood between the peoples of Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
