DRC: Week begins with clashes between rebels and militias

Kinshasa, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) The Congo River Alliance-March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) and the Wazalendo militias clashed in Luke, in Masisi territory, North Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

In a week in which delegations from the rebels and the DRC government are supposedly due to return to negotiations in Qatar for a final peace agreement, this Monday, starting at 5:00 a.m. local time, residents of Luke reported fighting and explosions of heavy and light weapons.

According to Actualite.CD, the rebels launched an attack against the positions held in that town by the Wazalendo, allies of the DRC Armed Forces, with the aim of dislodging them and expanding their area of influence.

The situation has caused panic among residents of surrounding villages, who began fleeing into the forest just a month after returning to their homes.

The situation is complex for peace, as both sides continue their offensives.
