Georgia’s Parliament speaker calls on EU to apologize

Tbilisi, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Georgian society expects an apology from the European Union (EU) for supporting the attempted overthrow of the government, this nation's Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated on Monday.

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and European Commissioner Martha Kos previously released a joint statement urging the parties in Georgia to renounce violence and described the EU’s role in the Tbilisi riots as disinformation.

Papuashvili stated, “If I understand correctly, Kallas and Kos do not apologize for their spokesperson’s support for the demonstration to overthrow the government, in which resulted in the injury of 25 police officers were injured during the attack on the Georgian presidential palace. This is what Georgian society currently expects from the EU.”

The lawmaker also urged EU representatives to refrain from spreading false information about the Georgian elections and misleading public opinion. He believes that this kind of rhetoric only intensifies the radical forces’ efforts to undermine democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights in the country.

The Georgian press reported that more than 30 police officers were injured during the riots of a protest in Tbilisi.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, in turn, blamed the EU Ambassador to this nation, Pawel Herczynski, for organizing and supporting these riots.
