Hurricane Priscilla causes heavy rains in western Mexico

Mexico City, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Hurricane Priscilla, category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, will cause heavy to torrential rains in western Mexico as it passes through the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

A press release from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) states that at 21:00 local time yesterday, the center of the phenomenon was located 445 km south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco state, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h, gusts of 150 and displacement towards the north-northwest at six km/h.

In view of the system’s influence, experts forecast torrential rains (150 to 250 mm) in the states Michoacan; heavy rains in Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero and Nayarit, as well as showers (five to 25 mm) in Baja California Sur.

There will also be wind gusts of 80 to 100 km/h on the coasts of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacan; of 40 to 50 in the west of Guerrero, as well as swells of four to five meters high on the coast of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán, and of 2.5 to 3.5 in Guerrero.

The rains could be accompanied by electrical discharges and could cause waterlogging, landslides and flooding in low-lying areas of the aforementioned states, while winds could bring down trees and billboards.
