Uruguay assesses damage after storm in department of Paysandu

Montevideo, Oct 6 (Prensa Latina) Lost roofs, fallen trees and power lines, power outages, and crashed and grounded boats are part of the damage count from a storm that raged in western Uruguay.

Many roofs were blown off by strong gusts of wind in the department of Paysandu, according to press reports, which add that some 7,000 residents were affected and several thousand were without power.

“We are primarily focused on addressing the initial food needs of people who have lost part of their homes. We are also focused on the night before, which is the most critical time. We are going to try to distribute mattresses and baskets,” said Interim Mayor Ricardo Molinelli.

The weather phenomenon also caused damage to the port of Nueva Palmira, on the banks of the Uruguay River near its confluence with the Paraná River, in the department of Colonia.

Port Captain Nicolas Suarez confirmed the detachment of ships and barges, and that the event caused the Aurora Trader to shift from its position and collide with the barge tug convoy Don Antonio, which ended up grounded on Agraciada Beach.

The Carmen S. vessel also broke free from its mooring and became stranded at Punta Chaparro. Additionally, five barges that were docked at an inland pier broke free and ran aground at the Brisas del Uruguay beach resort.
