DRC reports attacks against humanitarian workers

Kinshasa, October 8 (Prensa Latina) Humanitarian workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) were at the center of 46 security incidents during September, according to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The report, released by the local press, pointed out that while the number of cases decreased equal to the 80 reported in August, it shows a greater severity in the nature of the events, with 10 kidnappings and three injuries.

Since the beginning of the year, 436 incidents involving these workers have been reported, in which 13 people died, 25 were injured, and 29 were kidnapped.

OCHA reported that the types of incidents observed in September are similar to those of previous months, with robberies, thefts, and intrusions being the most frequent (37 percent); followed by interference and access restrictions (34), as well as intimidation, threats, and physical attacks (25).

North and South Kivu provinces are the most affected, with 61 and 26% of cases, respectively.

The security situation remains extremely worrying in eastern DRC, due to persistent armed conflict and widespread violence, with civilians being the main victims.
