Che’s death in that country surrounded by the Andes Mountains occurred on October 9, 1967, and a myth about him grew among the residents of the Vallegrande area, nurtured over the past 40 years by the very people who knew him.
The documentary “San Ernesto nace en La Higuera” (Saint Ernesto is Born in La Higuera) addresses this tradition, continuing the tributes paid to the fighter each year.
A museum in his memory now operates at the school in La Higuera where he was executed.
Throughout the town of La Higuera, there are inscriptions, monuments, and tributes to the Argentine-Cuban guerrilla.
