In his remarks after the Angelus prayer before thousands of faithful and pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff stated that “with deep sadness, I follow the tragic news coming from Sudan.”
He referred in particular to the recent massacre in the city of El Fasher, in North Darfur, a town rocked by “indiscriminate violence against women and children, attacks against defenseless civilians, and serious obstacles to humanitarian aid.”
This situation, the Holy Father stated, is “causing unacceptable suffering to a population already exhausted by months of conflict,” and he reiterated his “sincere appeal to the parties involved to declare a ceasefire and urgently open humanitarian corridors.”
“Finally, I call upon the international community to intervene decisively and generously, to offer assistance and support to those working tirelessly to provide aid,” the Bishop of Rome said, according to a statement from the Holy See Press Office.
