The information, widely reported by Syrian media, indicated that the purpose of this measure is to support a security pact that Washington is negotiating between Israel and Syria.
The sources, which include two Western officials and a Syrian defense official, specified that the agreement had not yet been made public and would represent a strategic shift in Syria’s relationship with the United States after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024.
The planned base would be located near areas of southern Syria that are expected to fall under a demilitarized zone according to the pact being negotiated between Damascus and Tel Aviv, mediated by Washington. Additionally, it is reported that US President Donald Trump will receive Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on November 10 in Washington, in what would be the first visit by a Syrian head of State since these talks began.
The US presence at the base is intended to provide logistical support, surveillance, resupply, and humanitarian aid, while Syria would retain full sovereignty over the site, according to sources.
