The monarchs’ agenda includes meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, Zhao Leji, along with economic and cultural events.

Their Majesties will begin their trip in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, a city that opened the last of Spain’s five consulates general in China in 2022. Sichuan Airlines has also been operating a direct flight to Madrid several times a week since April.

After their stay in Chengdu, the King and Queen will travel to Beijing on Tuesday, where they will be received by Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan, who will host a private dinner.

On Wednesday, before a meeting with Xi Jinping, the monarchs will receive military honors at the Great Hall of the People.

King Felipe VI will reportedly discuss current international affairs with his Chinese counterparts after completing an economic and cultural program in both Chengdu and Beijing.

This visit will also provide an opportunity to strengthen the close ties between Spain and China, which have been underscored by visits from Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and several ministers in recent months.
