Meloni assured Abbas of Italy’s support for a stable peace in Gaza

Rome, Nov 8 (Prensa Latina) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Rome's support for the process of stabilizing peace in Gaza during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is visiting Italy, according to news reports.

A statement from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers emphasizes that, in the meeting between the two leaders Meloni reiterated the need to consolidate the ceasefire and implement the agreements to end the conflict, in which more than 67,000 Palestinians have already died as a result of Israeli attacks.

The Prime Minister also assured Abbas that her country will maintain humanitarian assistance to the civilian population of Gaza Strip through the “Food for Gaza” initiative, in addition to medical evacuations, especially of sick and wounded children, the provision of university scholarships, and assistance in police training.

The Italian head of government agreed with the Arab leader on the need to work towards a lasting political solution based on the two-state solution, although Rome’s recognition of Palestine remains conditional on the prior disarmament of Hamas and the formation of a government without the group’s participation.

Meloni confirmed that her country, based on the priorities indicated by the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), is working on a new humanitarian aid package and plans for the reconstruction of Gaza, which will be presented at a conference on the subject to be held in Egypt in the coming days.
