The strategic initiative, developed by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, seeks to overcome historical obstacles such as high production costs, unfair competition in markets, rural poverty, and the effects of droughts and erratic weather patterns.
According to the Ministry, the plan aims to promote high-value crops and livestock, expand opportunities for women and youth in rural areas, and strengthen nutritional security through sustainable technologies.
The ultimate goal is to build an inclusive, resilient, and competitive agri-food system. The project aligns with South Africa’s Ten-Year Science, Technology, and Innovation Plan 2022–2032 and the FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022–2031 to promote what the international organization calls the “Four Best”: improved production, nutrition, environment, and living conditions.
Furthermore, according to a ministerial statement, it will directly contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on Zero Hunger; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and Climate Action.
