Brazil: COP30 encourages consensus and signs of global cooperation

Belem, Brazil, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC-COP30) enters its second day in this city on Tuesday with an encouraging sign: consensus among countries on the negotiation agenda and signs of global cooperation.

“I want to thank the delegations for the fantastic agreement reached on Sunday. This understanding will allow us to begin working intensively and explain to the world why these additional issues are so important,” COP30 President, Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago, told reporters.

Correa do Lago praised the commitment reached over the weekend, describing it as an essential step to begin formal discussions.

With the agenda approved, negotiations are taking place in the so-called Blue Zone, the restricted area where diplomats from nearly 200 nations are debating line by line the texts that will shape global commitments.

More than 100 documents, covering everything from the new climate finance target to policies on mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage, will be reviewed during the two weeks of deliberations.

COP30 Executive Director Ana Toni announced in an interview with GloboNews that 145 issues will be discussed, at least twenty of which are considered strategic.

Natalie Unterstell, president of the Talanoa Institute, noted that this achievement reflects excellent coordination that avoided obstacles on sensitive issues such as climate finance and emissions reduction targets.

One of the main objectives will be to review the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2035.
