The history of these relations, founded on mutual respect and solidarity, began extraordinarily, Cuban Ambassador to Indonesia, Dagmar Gonzalez, underscored at the commemoration.
Gonzalez remembered that the meetings of legendary figures such as Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and Commander Ernesto “Che” Guevara marked the beginning of these ties.
The diplomat noted that in these 65 years of relations, “we have shared fundamental values such as dignity, self-determination, sovereignty, solidarity, and the defense of the Global South, and these same principles have guided our cooperation in international forums.”
Gonzalez emphasized that Indonesia reaffirms every year its support for Cuba at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) when voting against the economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on her country more than six decades ago.
The ambassador also remarked, “Cuba has extended a hand of solidarity with Indonesia by sending medical brigades to assist the victims of the natural disasters that occurred in Banda Aceh in 2004 and in Yogyakarta in 2006.”
