In a letter read by Environment Minister Marina Silva, the host president announced that upon his return to the forum, he will meet with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The Brazilian president stated: “I will return to Belem on November 19 to meet with the UN secretary-general in a joint effort to strengthen climate governance and multilateralism.”
Lula asserted that a plan for the energy transition and the end to illegal deforestation are necessary.
He stated, “We need plans so that humanity, in a fair and planned way, can overcome its dependence on fossil fuels, halt and reverse deforestation, and mobilize resources for these purposes. We cannot leave Belem without decisions on these issues.”
The president also pointed out that he would participate in meetings with representatives from several countries, civil society, indigenous peoples, and traditional communities, as well as governors and mayors.
Lula delivered the opening address of COP30 on November 10.
Advisors directly involved in the event noted that Lula’s return is not considered a definitive solution for resolving outstanding agreements, but could have political and symbolic weight in the conclusion of the agreements.
