Kazakhstan suspends application of Conventional Armed Forces Treaty

Astana, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) Kazakhstan has suspended the application of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), according to a decree issued by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Astana.

The Kazakh head of State also indicated that the decision would be communicated to the entire information and legal system of the Central Asian country.

The CFE was signed in 1990, entered into force in 1992, and was amended in 1997.

The agreement limited the total levels of conventional weapons and equipment in five main categories (tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters, and combat aircraft), as well as mechanisms for verifying compliance with obligations (information sharing and inspections).

The members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) did not ratify the adapted version of this document and continued to adhere to the 1990 provisions containing conventional arms standards, taking into account the balance between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.

On May 29, 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Moscow’s withdrawal from the CFE.
