Egypt warns of temporary deployment of foreign troops in Gaza

Cairo, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) Egypt affirmed that any deployment of international troops in the Gaza Strip must be temporary and reiterated its support for Palestinian independence, an official statement reported on Friday.

A Foreign Ministry statement noted that Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had a phone call with Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh, as part of the coordination regarding the situation in the occupied territories.

The Egyptian diplomat emphasized that all security agreements concerning Gaza, including the deployment of an International Stabilization Force to monitor the ceasefire and the delivery of aid, are temporary.

Abdelatty stated that after that period, the coastal enclave must be handed over to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), which, he said, must assume full governance and security responsibilities.

The foreign minister also emphasized the principle of geographical contiguity between the West Bank and Gaza, while reaffirming Cairo’s position on the need to consolidate the ceasefire, guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access, and relaunch a credible political process based on international agreements and the two-state solution.

The text underscored that both sides agreed to maintain close consultations to support Palestinian rights and work toward a fair and lasting peace in the occupied territories.
