They stated that this attack in international waters of the Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast, is a flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation (SUA Convention).
The document underscored, “Such actions not only threaten the sovereignty of Venezuela and Cuba, but also undermine the principles of peace and cooperation that should tule international relations.”
ACCRA also urged the international community, academic institutions, and multilateral organizations to speak out against these illegal practices and defend respect for sovereignty, peace, and cooperation among nations.
The theft, on December 10, of an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast, in a military operation publicly confirmed by US President Donald Trump, has generated international condemnation.
The Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter described the action as a new unilateral act of coercion against Venezuela and warned that it “is a serious violation of international law, including the property right.”
